Wetter
Changing cloud cover. First overcast, then half cloudy, later a clearing up. Only light head wind and somewhat warmer.
Beschaffenheit
The morning spent 'in the streets of Rovaniemi'. Then northbound on the main road towards Kittilä along river Ounasjoki. First I go on a following gravel road, then on the main road itself, intersected with parts on bike lanes. Very little traffic.
Bemerkungen
The first day of the northern laplandian stretch of six days to Finland's northernmost point in Nuorgam. Before I emerged into the wilderness I stocked up my supplies in a supermarket. And before that I visited the post office in order to send to parcels. One to Raija in Oulu as she had forgotten the bracelet, I had given to her, in my tent and one to my son Simon with a sticker album of the football World Cup. As I went on the following gravel road I missed the road sign telling me I was crossing the polar circle. So I went back on the main road. This was breaking news back home on the mobile phone. After that an easy and quite undramatic stage that ended on the most beautiful of all camping sites, namely in the wilderness by a cataract in the river Ounasjoki. There was a fire place and a good bathing place in the river. Furthermore the weather was nice, but still fairly cold. But then there were no mosquitoes. I really enjoyed wild life in the wilderness here.
