Wir haben entschieden, eine zweite Nacht in Saumur zu verbringen und den Tag für Ausflüge in die Umgebung zu nutzen.
Etwa sieben Kilometer westlich von Saumur befindet sich die L'Ecole Nationale d'Equitation, die berühmteste französische Reitschule. Sie ist auch unter der Bezeichnung Cadre Noir bekannt.
Der Weg dorthin führt durch leicht hügeliges Gelände, ein erhebliches Stück davon auf dem Loire-Radweg zurück Richtung Angers. Im Rahmen einer Führung bekommen wir den Ablauf und die Einrichtungen der Reitschule erklärt (für mich nicht französisch Redenden gab es eine kurze Zusammenfassung in einem Faltblatt auf Deutsch).

Danach radelten wir zurück Richtung Saumur, bogen vor der Stadt in das Tal der Thouet und folgten dieser auf einem flach verlaufenden Radweg für zwölf Kilometer. Danach noch einige Hügel hinauf und hinunter und hinauf.
Das Ziel ist das Château de Brézé. Der sichtbare Teil des Schlosses ist nicht überragend beeindruckend, aber doch eine sehr stattliche Dreiflügel-Anlage. Das Schloss ist von einem 18 Meter tiefen in den Tuffstein gehauenen Graben umgeben.

Das Besondere liegt im Untergrund. Unter dem Schloss befindet sich ein unterirdisches Château aus der Zeit um 1060 mit Erweiterungen bis ins 15-te Jhdt. In einem in den Tuffstein gehauenen Höhlensystem konnten sich die Bewohner samt Vieh als Lebendfutterreserve verschanzen. Im Backofen dieses Höhlensystems konnten pro Backgang 100 Pfund Brot gebacken werden.

Zurück in Saumur nutzen wir die Zeit, uns die Stadt von der Loire-Brücke und vom Aussichtspunkt oberhalb des Schlosses anzusehen.
