Cartuja de Miraflores

Miraflores Charterhouse (Spanish: Cartuja de Miraflores) is a charterhouse, or Carthusian monastery, located in the city of Burgos , it is situated about four kilometres from the historic city center.

For centuries it was a summer residence of the Spanish monarchy and is one of the most important Gothic buildings of Spain.

The buildings were originally built as a palace for Henry III of Castile in 1401, while his son John II of Castile gave it to the Carthusian Order in order to made it a royal burial place, and in 1441 the abbey was founded. In 1452 the palace was damaged by fire and reconstruction started in 1454 under the direction of the architects Juan de Colonia and Simón de Colonia. The restoration was finished in 1484, during the reign of Isabella I of Castile.

Among the treasures of the Charterhouse are the wooden statue of St. Bruno, the wooden choir stalls in the church and the mausoleum of King John II and of his wife, Isabella of Portugal, constructed of marble and with their alabaster recumbent effigies. Around the top frieze are statues of angels in miniature. The French soldiers in the War of Independence (1814) mutilated this beautiful work, cutting off some of the heads and carrying them away to France. King John II's daughters by his first wife, heiresses Catherine, Princess of Asturias, and Eleanor, Princess of Asturias, are also buried in the monastery.
