Saint-Jean-de-Côle is a village in Dordogne, on the banks of the Côle river.

Understand

Saint-Jean-de-Côle is classified as the most beautiful village in France. It is a charming medieval village with its ochre-coloured houses, including many half-timbered houses. The major attractions in the village are a 12th-century priory and a Romanesque Byzantine church of Saint John the Baptist.

See

  • Château de La Marthonie (Marthonie Castle), 1 Le Bourg, +33 553 621415. The Marthonie Castle dominates the square, with its towers crowned with machicolation, and its facades pierced with mullioned windows. Its remaining space is garnished by a monumental staircase "told straight ramps".
