Travel to and from ...

Different as planned we took the train from Odense to Svendborg and back to Odense the day after.

Remarks

The ridden tour turned out a little different to the planned one. In stead of going alone I rode along with my friend Kolja, in stead of Tuesday to Thursday we stayed only one night (Wednesday to Thursday) and in stead of cycling all the way from Odense we took the train to Svendborg and cycled to Southern Langeland (the Langeland fort, the southern tip of Langeland and the town of Bagenkop) to the tent site at Skovsgaard. On the following day we visited Skovsgaard and cycled to Svendborg with a detour on the island of Taasinge and went back by train to Odense.

The museum for the servants at Skovsgaard

The basement and first floor of Skovsgaard is a museum for the servants. You can call it a reverse manor house museum, because the audience for once get to see how life was for the servants who lived in small rooms downstairs in the basement, while the masters had two floors with over 20 rooms available.
Walking around you go on the first floor through the landowner's study and his wife's perfumed bedroom. From there you go down the stairs to the basement, where you will meet maids in the process of doing their daily lives in the kitchens, and you see a lot of room for firewood and food, and may eventually look into the dark and somewhat filthy outdoor privy.

The Carriage Museum at Skovsgaard
The Carriage museum is housed in the old stables. There are about 25 work- and professional and private carriages in a natural setting: The bridal coach is drawn by an old Oldenborger horse in a street in Rudkobing in 1900, with building facades, paving, signs and street lamps; the bakery carriage stands on a courtyard in front of a small half-timbered and the sleighs in a winter landscape.
There are several other types of carriages and sleighs, and also a collection of the last private owner, Miss Ellen Fuglede's toys.

The Forestry Museum at Skovsgaard
The Forestry Museum describes the development of forestry seen with Langeland eyes, from about 1900 until the 1980s. Langeland has historically had good forestry and much forest has been owned by the estates, especially the county of Langeland. Today, State Forestry Administration island's major forest owner, and new forests are planted.

The Forestry Museum shows the development from the time when people went into the woods year round and where the trap ax, forest tilt jack and forest sledding and horse were the main tools to the present day, where forest contractors replaces forestry workers.

The exhibition has a section for children, where they can meet the forest troll and tell the story about the time when the magician bewitched maiden Ellen on Skovsgaard.

Tractor and Machine Collection at Skovsgaard.

The Association Langeland Tractor and Machine Collection exhibits tractors and agricultural machines fromt a bygone era in the development of agriculture. The exhibits are at least 35 years of age and have all driven in Denmark from new or used imported before 1980.

In connection with the exhibition there is established a workshop where members work with the repair and refurbishment of the old machines.

Valdemar's Castle (Danish: Valdemars Slot) is a small palace situated on the island of Tåsinge Wikipedia Icon near Svendborg Wikipedia Icon in southern Denmark.

History

Valdemar's Castle was commissioned by King Christian IV (1588–1648) and built between 1639 and 1644 under the supervision of his architect Hans van Stenwinkel. "Castle" is how the local population refer to the building when speaking English, but despite the ornamental cannons outside, it is not a fortification, but rather, a large mansion house. The nearest fortification to Valdemar's Slot was Kærstrup voldsted, two kilometers to the west, today a copse near the junction of Vievej and Nørreskovvej.

King Christian was well-known for his interest in building. Tåsinge, the island where Christian planned to have Valdermar's Slot built, belonged to his mother in law Ellen Marsvin. He intended the new mansion should become the home of his son Valdemar Christian, whose mother was Kirstine Munk. In the event, Valdemar Christian never occupied the place, and in 1656 was killed during a battle in Poland.

In 1678 the naval hero, Admiral Niels Juel, was given title to the castle and the land on Tåsinge after his victory over Sweden in the Battle of Køge Bay in 1677. The estate was transferred to him as payment for the Swedish ships captured in the battle.

Today

The present owner, Baron Iuel-Brockdorff, who is 11th generation of the Juel family, took over his childhood home from his father in 1971 and lives in the castle with his wife and family. Valdemars Slot has been open to the public since 1974. The mansion is open from May to October and on public holidays. It features a large chapel, a toy museum, the Iuel-Brockdorff family's big game trophy collection and a local maritime museum. As it stands close by the shore, many visitors make the trip from Svendborg using the veteran ferry Helge.
