Character

Planned bike ride. Will be ridden in June 2014. Is planned as divided into four stages: 1st stage, Monday, June 16, Bamberg-Forchheim, ca. 36 km. With visits to Forchheim incl. Kellerwald. 2nd stage, Tuesday, June 17, Forchheim-Nuremberg, ca. 44 km. Rest day, Wednesday, June 18, in Nuremberg with the following options: Visiting the castle, the entire Reichs party rally area with a museum in the Congress Hall and the stadium. 3rd stage, Thursday, June 19, Nuremberg-Riedenburg, approx. 110km. Visit the brewery here. 4th stage: Riedenburg-Regensburg, approx. 55 km. Visit to the Stone Bridge, the cathedral and the medieval town center.

Altogether a week with half a day in Bamberg and one in Regensburg and two days for trains there and back.

Landscape

Flood plains, partially renovated into canals so that both Regnitz 'and Altmühls riverbeds are partially regulated. Very beautiful towns, such as Bamberg, Forchheim, Nuremberg, Hilpoltstein, Beilngries, Riedenburg and Regensburg. Good cycling paths along the rivers and canals. Good beer region, especially Bamberg, Forchheim and Riedenburg.

Die Altenburg ist eine mittelalterliche Höhenburg in der kreisfreien Stadt Bamberg im bayerischenRegierungsbezirk Oberfranken.

Die Altenburg wurde 1109 erstmals in einer Urkunde erwähnt, mit der Bischof Otto von Bamberg die Burganlage dem Kollegiatstift St. Jakob übereignete. Die Burg war von 1305 bis 1553 die zweite Residenz der Bamberger Fürstbischöfe. In ihren heutigen Ausmaßen entstand die Burg im frühen 15. Jahrhundert.

Im Bauernkrieg 1524/1525 wurde die Altenburg zwar belagert, aber weder eingenommen noch sind schwerwiegende Zerstörungen überliefert.

Im Zweiten Markgrafenkrieg von 1553 wurde die Burg nicht durch Erstürmung, sondern nach der Übergabe an das Kriegsheer des Markgrafen Albrecht Alcibiades von Brandenburg-Kulmbach der Zerstörung preisgegeben.

Ein Erdrutsch zerstörte im letzten Viertel des 18. Jahrhunderts Teile der Ostmauer. Diese Mauern wurden erst wieder im beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert in Sichtbeton neu errichtet.
