Auf dem Weg aus der Altstadt besichtigen wir die Sankt-Andreas-Kirche, die evangelische Stadtpfarrkirche Weißenburgs. Dann radeln wir zur Südwest-Ecke der Altstadt Richtung Bahnhof.

Für beinahe acht Kilometer radeln wir westlich der Bahngleise Richtung Treuchtlingen. Im kleinen Ort Graben stoßen wir auf die Reste des Karlsgrabens. Karl der Große hatte um 793 hier einen Kanal zwischen der Altmühl und der Schwäbischen Rezat erbauen lassen. Von dem auch Fossa Carolina genannten Kanal sind noch rund 350 Meter Wasserfläche und 500 Meter Erdwälle erhalten.

Im Ort Graben treffen wir auf den Altmühltalradweg.

Am Kurpark entlang fahren wir nach Treuchtlingen hinein. An der Altmühlstraße steht eine Schnellzuglokomotive 01220 von 1937. Sie hat eine Laufleistung von rund 4,5 Millionen Kilometer und ist seit 50 Jahren hier aufgestellt. Im Ortskern fällt das Stadtschloss auf und das Bürgerhaus mit gehäkelten Motiven auf den Schlagläden.

Auf schmalen Straßen und Wegen radeln wir das Altmühltal hinunter, häufig mit Blick auf den Fluss. Dann liegt Pappenheim vor uns. Auf dem Bergsporn die Burganlage aus dem 13-ten Jhdt. Wir radeln über buckeliges Kopfsteinpflaster hinauf zur Burg. Für 5 € p.P. hätten wir auf das Burggelände gekonnt, sichere Abstellmöglichkeiten für Räder und Gepäck haben wir aber nicht gefunden. So rollen wir wieder hinunter in die kleine Altstadt.

Die nächsten sechs Kilometer bis Solnhofen radeln wir wieder schön am Flussufer entlang. Berühmt ist der Ort vor allem wegen seiner Steinbrüche, die Fossilien aus dem etwa 150 Millionen Jahre alten Weißen Jura enthalten. Uns aber interessiert mehr der Bahnhof. Dort sollen in wenigen Minuten unsere Frauen eintreffen.

Zu viert radeln wir weiter. Noch fünf Kilometer sind es an der Altmühl, vorbei an den "Zwölf Aposteln", einer Reihe von Felstürmen am gegenüberliegenden Uferhang.

Ab Altendorf führt unser Weg durch das Tal der Gailach. Oberhalb des Ortes weiden Schafe am gegenüberliegenden Jurahang. Wir radeln die nächsten sechs Kilometer auf der Straße im Talgrund. Dann biegen wir auf einen Wirtschaftsweg ein, der weiter der Talsohle folgt. Ruhig und schön ist es hier. Im Talgrund befinden sich ein Wiesenstreifen und die Gailach. An den Hängen Nadelwald und gelegentlich offenes Buschland.

Bei Warching wird das Tal weiter und ist jetzt landwirtschaftlich genutzt. Erst kurz vor Monheim kommen wir wieder auf die Straße. Durch das Obere Tor radeln wir auf den Marktplatz der alten Stadt, in der sich seit 870 ein Kloster befand. 1518 hat sich Luther hier auf seiner Flucht aus Augsburg aufgehalten. In einem Café neben dem Oberen Tor legen wir eine Pause ein.

Auf der Donauwörther Straße radeln wir aus Monheim hinaus. Neben der B2 haben wir einen Radweg zur Verfügung. Abseits des motorisierten Verkehrs fahren wir nach Buchdorf und weiter talabwärts nach Kaisheim.

In Kaisheim stauen wir über die Gebäude des ehemaligen reichsunmittelbaren Klosters. Zugänglich sind die rund 80 x 30 Meter große Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt und der Kaisersaal. Die restlichen Gebäude werden von der Justizvollzugsanstalt genutzt.

Weiter rollen wir am Kaibach entlang das schöne Tal hinunter nach Donauwörth. Am Nordrand der Altstadt liegt unser Hotel. Die Fahrräder werden im Wintergarten eingeschlossen und wir beziehen unsere ruhig gelegenen Zimmer im Obergeschoss.

Nach einem ausführlichen Rundgang durch die Altstadt finden wir mit einiger Mühe einen freien Tisch im Außenbereich eines Restaurants und lassen den Abend dort gemütlich ausklingen.
