Travel report
The next morning Michael and I plunge into the cold sea at the sandy beach in the neighbourhood, before our cycling tour round the peninsula of Kegnaes can begin.
At Moeller's campsite, at the old lock at the water outlet from lake Hartsoe, and at the monument stone of the Reunion we endulge in childhood memories. Soon we've reached Soenderby, where we enter the church of Kegnaes. In order to receive some divine support to cope with our challenges. On the very tip of the peninsula we have a look at the two famous old wind turbines, which our sister has or has had an ownership share of. One of them is out of service, while the other one idly rotates. Bernhard spots his home on the other side of the bay of Soenderborg. At the former landing place of the Kegnaes ferry we empty our lunch boxes and a bottle of beer each. Quite unrespectfully we conquer a private table-and-bench-set right down to the coast of Hoeruphav, as the inlet between the island proper and the peninsula is called.
About six kilometres further ahead Bernhard and I replace our bicycles with segways for some time. A very talkative hirer out of segways go off with us on his off road track through a wood and down to the waterside. He is quite impressed of the way we ride the segway and even lets us compete in medieval the horse riding discipline 'tilting the ring', which is still popular in southern Jutland at summer festivals. Graciously, I let Bernhard rejoice in victory. After all, it was his idea. And there's not much joy in his life. In the end we even race in competition. Bernhard has to realise that my ass is to wide to be overtaken by him.
The next highlight, very literally that is, is Kegnaes lighthouse. Here we gaze the horizon and from up there we are able to point out places of previous bike weekends on the Danish island of Aeroe and on the German coast. Kegnaes lighthouse is a well-known meteorological station in Denmark and boasts the highest ever measured wind velocity and thus the unofficial Danish record in this discipline: 54 metres per second. That's almost double hurricane speed! That's so strong that the wind blows out the holes of a cheese.
Here we are near the Drejet, which is the connection with the main island proper. We go across the spit and have a cup of coffee and an ice cream at the campsite of Drejby. Afterwards we have a skinny dip at the naturist beach of Kerneland, but once again Bernhard isn't tempted by the 14 or 14 degrees of bathing water temperature. Only the two others of us have a swim in the buff and almost fall asleep in the sun afterwards. From Kerneland we ride our bikes back to Flejmose in the village of Oesterby. After a hazy start of the day the weather turned out really nice, and we enjoy ourselves on the patio. Again we've got nothing to complain about Bernhard's kitchen skills. Tonight he serves chicken in the oven. After our dinner yesterday night's late tucking up takes revenge On top of that comes my choice of entertainment in form of the UEFA Champion's League football final on my cell phone. It's so boring that we spend the probably most quiet Saturday night of any bike weekend ever.
