Lennep ist mit 25.440 Einwohnern (Stand 2008) der zweitgrößteStadtbezirk Remscheids. Als Mitglied der Hanse und preußische Kreisstadt war Lennep lange Zeit eine der wichtigsten Städte des Bergischen Landes.
Heute noch besitzt Lennep eine in der Grundstruktur mittelalterliche Altstadt, die zu den ausgewählten 35 historischen Stadtkernen Nordrhein-Westfalens zählt. 116 Häuser des Stadtkerns, darunter viele Bauwerke des „Bergischen Barock“, die nach dem Stadtbrand von 1746 entstanden, stehen unter Denkmalschutz.

Die Klosterkirche Lennep gilt als ältester bestehender Sakralbau Remscheids. Der Bau wurde 1677 von den Minoriten als Teil eines neuen Klosters begonnen und dauerte bis 1696. Bezogen wurde er bereits 1681. Heute sind hier ein Kulturzentrum und das Restaurant „Klosterschänke“ untergebracht. - Evangelische Stadtkirche
