Old town/World heritage site

In der Neustadt befinden sich zahlreiche Gebäude mit Jugendstilfassaden, besonders in den Straßen Elizabetes iela und Alberta iela mit vielen Arbeiten Michail Eisensteins. Um die Jahrhundertwende wurden im Grüngürtel um die Altstadt zahlreiche repräsentative Gebäude errichtet, darunter die Nationaloper, das Nationaltheater, das Kunstmuseum, die neugotische Lettische Kunstakademie (Latvijas Mākslas akadēmija) von 1905 sowie die Universität. Zwischen 1876 und 1884 entstand die Orthodoxe Kathedrale (Rīgas Kristus Piedzimšanas pareizticīgo katedrāle) im neubyzantinischen Stil.

Im südlich gelegenen Stadtteil Maskavas forštate (Moskauer Vorstadt) befinden sich die ehemaligen Zeppelin-Hallen des Zentralmarktes (Rīgas Centrāltirgus), der im stalinistischen Zuckerbäckerstil 1958 erbaute Kultur- und Wissenschaftspalast (Zinātņu akadēmijas augstceltne), die aus Holz im klassizistischen Stil erbaute protestantische Jesuskirche (Jēzus Evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca) sowie die Ruinen der Synagoge nahe dem ehemaligen Ghetto.

Die Gartenstadt Mežaparks ist ein Villenvorort, der Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Wäldern nördlich der Stadt gebaut wurde.

Auf der Düna-Insel Zaķusala (Hasenholm) steht der Fernsehturm (Rīgas radio un televīzijas tornis), der mit 368,5 Meter zu den höchsten Bauwerken Europas zählt und in seiner schlanken Konstruktion (mit dem Dreibein-Fundament) gut zum ebenfalls sehr schlanken Turm der Petrikirche passt. Pārdaugava (deutsch: Überdüna) bezeichnet das Stadtgebiet am linken Dünaufer. Es war über lange Zeit geprägt von ein- bis zweistöckigen Holzhäusern, von denen einige erhalten sind.
