Chilly in the valleys, beastly cold in the mountains. Overcast almost all day with just a few sunny spells. Windy! Moderate to fresh breeze from West.
Riksveg 98 127
From Nuorgam across the border to the junction with the E6 on a good road with only little traffic, then there is more traffic into Tana bru. From here to Vestertana on a quiet road along the river, then steeply ascending into the Ifjord mountains. First on tarmac, then, in the mountains, on a very bad gravel road. The descent is challenging, even if it runs mostly on bad tarmac.
The toughest stage of the bike trip. No doubt about that. Finland is over a few kilometres after Nuorgam, and the Norwegian mountains are waiting. Firstly in the lowland, however, into Tana bru, where I eat my packed lunch and watch Denmark's first World Cup match (0-2) in the local hotel. I also buy a new bike computer to replace the broken one from the stage to Nuorgam. After yet another piece along the lovely river Tana the road swings to the West and ascends steeply. Twice I loose all height again and twice I believed to be well up in the mountains already. That troubles me. The wind is also an issue, as it blows right from ahead. In the mountains it's really cold. Ice covers the lakes, but luckily the road is not slippery. A break with some ryebread is necessary, but very cold for my fingers. When the tarmac ends and a bumpy gravel road begins, it gets really strenuous. For my bike as well. Luckily it works on the quick descent from the mountains to Ifjord. But at last the rear wheel bearing breaks. To my utmost joy I'm just outside Ifjord mountain resort, where I'm warmly welcomed with coffee by the young hosting couple, even if it's very late. I'm also allowed to pitch my tent in the garden. I make supper in the kitchen. Tomorrow I have to solve the problem with the bike.
