Die Anreise mit dem Zug hat gut geklappt. Pünktlich sind wir in Aachen angekommen. Lediglich die Aufzüge am Bahnhof in Düsseldorf haben uns die Benutzung schwer gemacht. Die Aufzugskabinen sind nicht auf Fahrräder ausgelegt und die Räder mussten an der Wand hoch aufs Hinterrad gestellt werden. Für meine Frau alleine war das mit dem E-Bike und dem Reisegepäck nicht zu handhaben.
In Aachen haben wir uns nicht aufgehalten und sind direkt zur Vennbahntrasse geradelt. Die Zufahrt aus der Stadt war gut gelegt und wir hatten mit dem motorisierten Verkehr keine Probleme.
Die Vennbahntrasse beginnt nach circa 2½ km an der Trierer Straße. Sie ist über die gesamte Länge bestens ausgebaut, die Oberfläche ist durchgängig Asphalt. In bequemer Bahnsteigung radeln wir die folgenden zehn Kilometer bis zum Abzweig nach Kornelimünster.
Der Ort liegt etwa 25 m tiefer als die Bahntrasse. Die wenigen Meter auf der L233 müssen wir auf die Autos achten. Dann biegen wir in den Ortskern. Der Korneliusmarkt ist ein großer Parkplatz und stört das Bild des idyllischen historischen Ortskerns. Die Probsteikirche ist leider nicht zugänglich. Die Hochwasserkatastrophe vom 14.07.2021 hat sie schwer beschädigt. Die Abteigebäude lassen sich am besten von Westen einsehen.
In einem Café im Ort wurden unsere Fahrräder nicht gern gesehen. Wir sollen sie auf der anderen Straßenseite abstellen wurde uns vom Wirt in barschem Ton angesagt. Wir haben uns dann in einer kleinen Bäckerei am Steinkaulplatz versorgt.

Danach radeln wir auf der Vennbahntrasse weiter. Lange Strecken zwischen Büschen oder Bäumen wechseln sich mit kurzen Vorbeifahrten an ehemaliger Bahnhofinfrastruktur ab.
Bei Tageskilometer 22 überfahren wir die Grenze zu Belgien. Nach sechs Kilometern hätte es zurückgehen müssen nach Deutschland. Aber hier beginnt die Besonderheit, dass die Strecke durch Deutschland bis bei Kalterherberg in einem schmalen Korridor mit belgischen Hoheitsrechten verläuft.

In Konzen verlassen wir die Vennbahntrasse. Bei einer Übernachtungsanfrage für Monschau erhielten wir einen alternativen Routenvorschlag für die schon ein wenig eintönige Vennbahntrasse. Vielen Dank dafür an Wolfgang Weber. Auf asphaltierten Wirtschaftswegen radeln wir ins Hohe Venn. Bereits nach zwei Kilometern ändert sich das Landschaftsbild. Rechts vom Weg beginnen die Hochmoorgebiete mit ihrem typischen Bewuchs. Sie begleiten uns, mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung, bis zur N67.

Wir folgen der Straße bei regem Verkehr für zwei Kilometer. Dann biegen wir am Ortsbeginn von Mützenich in Wohnstraßen ab und rollen den Berg hinunter bis kurz hinter der Unterführung unter der Vennbahntrasse.
Von hier melden wir uns kurz bei unserem Gastgeber für heute Abend. Ein paar Meter weiter kommen wir zum ehemaligen Monschauer Bahnhof. Und dann rollen wir auch bald die Bergstraße hinunter nach Monschau. Vom unteren Teil der Bergstraße haben wir einen schönen Blick auf Stadt und Burg, die sich vor uns in das Tal und an die Hänge schmiegen.

An der Stadtstraße angekommen kommt uns unsere Gastgeberin bereits entgegen. Unsere Fahrräder können wir in ein verschlossenen Keller abstellen, ein wenig eng, aber sicher. Dann bekommen wir eine kurze Einweisung in die Unterkunft und beziehen unser sehr schönes Zimmer.
Auf der Suche nach einem Restaurant für das Abendessen schlendern wir noch ein wenig durch die hübsche Altstadt.
