Saarbrücken verlassen wir auf einer Fahrradstraße, in die die Hohenzollernstraße gewandelt worden ist. Nur 150 Meter müssen wir an der Hauptstraße entlang, bis wir zum Saar-Radweg abbiegen können.

Auf dem Leinpfad radeln wir flussabwärts. Beim Laufwasserkraftwerk in Burbach müssen wir wegen Sperrung des Radweges auf die andere Seite der Saar wechseln. Aber auch dort ist ein guter Radweg auf dem Leinpfad vorhanden. In Völklingen queren wir zurück auf den Saar-Radweg.

Die Spitzen der Hochöfen der Völklinger Hütte auf der gegenüberliegenden Saarseite sehen wir knapp oberhalb der Buschreihe am Radweg. Weiter radeln wir fast immer auf dem Leinpfad. Vor Saarlouis verpassen wir die angedachte Abkürzung zur Stadtmitte und radeln im weiten Bogen um die Liesdorfer Aue. So kommen wir von Norden in den Stadtkern von Saarlouis.

Der Große Markt, ehemaliger Exerzierplatz der Festung, ist ein riesiger Parkplatz. In der Französischen Straße herrscht geschäftiges Treiben. Uns hält nichts im Stadtkern und wir radeln zum Deutschen Tor und biegen hinter der Schleusenbrücke in den Stadtgarten.

Entlang des Saaraltarmes radeln wir zurück zum Radweg.

Am Ufer entlang führt uns der gut ausgebaute Radweg bis Hilbringen. Dort haben wir es wieder mit einer Sperrung zu tun. Und wieder nehmen wir die ausgeschilderte Umleitung (vermutlich am Ostufer der Saar entlangführend) nicht wahr. Stattdessen suchen wir einen Weg über Ballern und Rech. Schließlich kommen wir über die Brücke der B51 ans Ostufer und erreichen dort auch wieder den Saar-Radweg.

Kurz darauf kommen wir an die Saarschleife. Der Aussichtspunkt Am Cloef ist leicht durch den darüber liegenden Aussichtsturm des Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife auszumachen. Wir radeln direkt am Fluss und damit am Fuß der steilen Hänge fast acht Kilometer durch die Saarschleife.

Unterhalb der Schleuse erreichen Keuchingen und sind wenig weiter in Mettlach. Die Fahrräder kommen in die verschlossene Doppelgarage des Hotels und wir ziehen in unser Zimmer im Dachgeschoss.

Für den ursprünglichen Plan zum Cloef zu wandern ist es uns dann doch zu spät. Hin und zurück wären es gut elf Kilometer.

Für einen Rundgang durch Mettlach ist jedoch noch reichlich Zeit. Erstaunt stellen wir fest, wie viele Factory-Outlets es hier gibt. Von den historischen Gebäuden ist natürlich das barocke Abteigebäude hervorzuheben, in dem sich heute die Hauptverwaltung von Villeroy & Boch befindet. Der Alte Turm, der letzte erhaltene Rest der im Jahr 1819 abgebrochenen Mettlacher Abteikirche St. Peter und Maria, ist wegen Bauarbeiten nicht zugänglich.
